Rituals and traditions: worship of spirits

Myanmar, Bago: A celebration dedicated to the spirits.

In Myanmar, 37 spirits or "Nats" are known.

People often dedicate to them a specific attention, ordering a celebration in a Pagoda.

The event is conducted by a medium, the "Nat Kadaw". During several hours, a traditional orchestra plays sequences of music, very loudly. The medium stands or dances at the center of a half circle made by the family who ordered the ceremony.

The Nat Kadaw going into a trance, embodies then the spirit invoked.

The identity of the specific spirit invoked is recognized by the clothes worn.
